Gut barrier, inflammation predict mortality in US group on ART

[From International AIDS Society, Mark Mascolini, Nov 13, 2014] Markers of gut epithelial barrier integrity, immune activation, inflammation, and coagulation predicted mortality in a case-control study of a US cohort responding to antiretroviral therapy (ART).

Previous research showed that heightened inflammation predicts mortality in HIV-positive people taking ART. Because less is known about the prognostic value of gut barrier dysfunction and T-cell markers, US researchers undertook this study.
