AIDS epidemic can be ended by 2030, report says

[From BMJ, Anne Gulland, Nov 20, 2014] The AIDS epidemic can be stopped by 2030, despite only 38% of adults with HIV or AIDS currently having access to antiretroviral drugs, a new report by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS) has said.

UNAIDS estimated that 13.6 million people with HIV or AIDS had access to antiretroviral drugs in June this year, compared with 9.7 million at the end of 2012. It described this rise as a “huge step” but warned that progress needed to be accelerated if the AIDS epidemic were to be ended by 2030.
